Week One 2023

Hey All,

Labor Day has come and gone and with it the first full week of the college football season. Let's take look back at it with another edition of Notes on a Pac 12 Scorecard. We still miss you, Alan Malamud.

Summaries

USC 66- Nevada 14: Los Angeles, CA- The Trojans moved to 2-0 on the season with a whipping of the Wolfpack at the Coliseum. SC QB Caleb Williams had so much time to throw that he just stood flat footed in the pocket at times until his receivers got open. Williams torched Nevada for 319 yards passing and five TDs in just three quarters worth of work. Trojan RBs MarShawn Lloyd and Quinten Joyner combined for 141 yards and a pair of touchdowns on just 11 carries. Tahj Washington was USC's leasding receiver with 75 yards and two scores on three receptions.  Oh, and super freshman Zachariah Branch chipped in with a TD on his only catch of the game. However, with all that offensive goodness, the Trojan defense still came under fire.  That happens when your DBs get burned on long passes for 73 and 77 yards. There were also times when the defense was lined up poorly and gave up some some easy 10+ yard rushing gains.  However, the defensive line led by Bear Alexander spent most of the game in the Nevada backfield. USC recorded five sacks and 10 tackles for losses.  The unit did play down a couple of players as SC's two top inside linebackers, Mason Cobb and Eric Gentry, did not dress out for the game due to injury. That position got thinner when true frosh LB Tackett Curtis was ejected for targeting after he knocked the helmet off Nevada WR Daelvon Campbell.  The Trojans overcame Tackett's ejection and stifled any real threat the Wolf Pack might have remotely had at winning this game. After the game was well in hand, QB Miller Moss spelled Williams for the whole fourth quarter and all he did was complete seven of 10 throws for 134 yards and a TD.  The TD was a 71-yard catch and run by heralded freshman TE Duce Robinson. For the Wolfpack, QB Brendan Lewis threw for 182 yards in the lopsided loss.
Telling Stat: 28 hands; 14 different Trojans caught passes in this laugher played just off of Christmas Tree Lane.

Utah 24- Florida 11: Salt Lake City, UT- A very loud crowd at Rice Eccles Stadium saw a Utah team minus QB Cam Rising, TE Brant Katie and several other starters dominate a talented, but sloppy and undisciplined Florida squad.  Rising's backup QB Bryson Barnes got Utah on the board quickly with a 70-yard TD pass to WR Money Parks on the Utes first offensive play of the season. The Gators were reeling after that play, but did manage to make a game of it for awhile.  However special teams gaffes that brought flashbacks of John Baxter's awful special teams at USC took the Gators out of the game.  Down 7-3 at the start of the second quarter UF PK Adam Mihalek missed a 31-yard field goal.  The Gator defense did manage to force an Utah punt on the next series, but found themselves right back on the field because their punt return unit had two players wearing the same number on the kick.  Utah took that first down and scored quickly. They got that score with their third QB Nate Johnson.  Johnson ran through the Gators for a 27-yard touchdown. The PAT gave the Utes a 14-3 lead.  It might as well have a been a 50 point lead because the Florida offense couldn't put a drive together. Utah put the game away when they intercepted a pass deep in Florida territory and returned it to the Gators 11-yard line.  Three plays later Barnes scampered in from five yards out to make the score 24-3 in the third period. The Gators got a cosmetic score late to make this game look a lot closer than it really was.  For the victorious Utes, Barnes completed 12 of 18 passes for 159 yards and a TD while Johnson led all rushers with 45 yards on six carries and a score.  Utah only gained 270 total yards, but they didn't need more thanks to their defense.  For the now 0-1 Gators QB Graham Mertz completed 31 of 44 passes for 333 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Telling Stat: 13 is a magic number; Utah made Florida a one dimensional offense holding the Gators to just 13 yards rushing.  Also, the Utes held Florida to just 1 for 13 on 3rd down conversions.

Arizona State 24- Southern Utah 21: Tempe, AZ- The first game for ASU under new HC Ken Dillingham was a scary ride to say the least for the Sun Devils.  At first it looked ASU would blow the Thunderbirds out of the stadium. After forcing a SUU punt, the Sun Devils, behind true Frosh QB Jaden Rashada, marched 68 yards in five plays to take a 7-0 lead when RB Cameron Skattebo sped into the end zone from six yards out.  Nothing was easy again for ASU.  SUU tied the game at 7-7 in the second quarter when RB Targhee Lambson score on two-yard run.  The Sun Devils then took a 21-7 lead into the break on a pair of TD passes form Rashada that covered 47 and three yards. The last of those score happened during a haboob that descended upon the stadium and spit rain and sand on all those there. Then, a lightning storm with high winds postponed the start of the third quarter for nearly two and a half hours.  When the second half did start, the Sun Devils' mentally stayed in the locker room.  The Thunderbirds took the game to ASU. They narrowed the score to 21-14 just at the end of the third quarter. The TD came from QB Zack Mitchell who hit WR Justin Miller with a 17-yard scoring toss.  Then with 7:50 left to play ASU was nursing a 24-14 lead when SUU blocked a Sun Devil punt.  LB George Ramirez scooped up the blocked punt and rumbled 47 yards to the end zone.  All of a sudden ASU was clinging to a three point lead and their offense hadn't gained a first down for most of the half either.  ASU punted baack to SUU, but held the Thunderbirds to a three and out.  ASU managed to run out the clock on their best drive of the half to preserve the win.  Rashada thew for 236 yards and two TDs while Skattebo led all rushers with 71 yards on 12 carries and a TD.  For Souther Utah, Miller completed eight of 17 passes for 123 yards and a score.
Telling Stat; 1 is ok;  Ken Dillingham got his first victory as Arizona State's HC. It was ugly, but the 33-yard old Dillingham will take it.

Stanford 37- Hawaii 24: Honolulu, HI- While Aloha Stadium sits condemned and a new one has yet to be built, an announced crowd of 13,739 at T.C. Ching Stadium saw the Cardinal wear down the Warriors last Friday night. It was Stanford's first win with new HC Troy Taylor pacing the sidelines.  The Cardinal slowly separated themselves from Warriors with a steady stream of off tackle runs and play action passes.  Sophomore QB Ashton Daniels spread the ball around to 10 different receivers mostly on short routes and managed to complete 25 passes for 248 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  His favorite target was one of the Cardinal's few returning starters from last year, TE Ben Yurosek.  Yurosek caught nine balls for 138 yards and a TD. Up 21-7 at the half, Stanford got field goals of 25, 25 and 46 yards from PK Josh Karty and 13-yard TD catch from WR John Humphreys to go up 37-16 midway through the final period. The win was a solid, workman like effort for the Cardinal who looked to be using just a small amount of their playbook. For the now, 0-2 Warriors, QB Brayden Schager completed 30 of 53 passes for 353 yards and three TDs in the loss.
Telling Stat: A negative is positive;  Stanford held Hawaii to -5 yards rushing for the game.

Colorado 45- TCU 42: Forth Worth, TX- The first game of Deion Sander's reign in Boulder is in the books and it was a barnburner that shocked the college football world.  Most of us are familiar with how Sanders took the Colorado job and then basically cut the entire team that was there and told them to hit the transfer portal while he did hit the portal to bring in a whole new squad of over 80 transfers.  How would this new team play come week one?  In reality it was a mixed bag as these new Buffaloes gained 565 yards and gave up 541 yards.  However, they did get the win. A big win by three points that Sanders used to berate all of his critics both real and imagined in the post game presser. Now, for a look at the actual game play. It was a true back and forth affair with CU holding a 17-14 lead the half then extending that lead  to 24-14 when QB Shedeur Sanders (Deion's Son) Hoooked up with RB Dylan Edwards for a 75-yard scoring strike. TCU then forged ahead for the first time with a pair of TD passes that covered 21 and 23 yards from QB Chandler Morris to TE Jared Wiley and WR Dylan Wright. The final 15:27 seconds was like a pair of tired boxers landing haymakers until the final bell.  TCU held a 42-38 lead with 4:25 left and Colorado faced a 4th and 2 at the TCU 46-yard line. Shedeur Sanders found Edwards one final time and the RB raced to the end zone with the game-winning score. TCU's last chance to win or send the game to overtime ended when Morris' fourth down pass to Wiley came upon just short of a first down at the CU 36-yard line.  Shedeur Sanders completed 38 of 47 passes for 510 yards and four TDs. Edward finished with 24 yards rushing and a TD, but caught five passes for 135 yards and three more scores.  For the hard luck Horned Frogs, Morris threw for 279 yards and a pair of TDs, while the RB duo of Emani Bailey and Trey Sanders combined to lug the leather 29 times for 210 yards and four TDs. The ironman award for this game goes to Colorado DB/WR Travis hunter went both ways for the Buffs and played 129 snaps.
Telling Stat: Happy Buffs; Colorado is 1-0.

Washington 59- Boise State 16: Seattle, WA- The Chris Petersen Bowl at Husky Stadium was competitive for about a quarter and a half. Then the Huskies blew the doors off the Broncos turning a 9-7 deficit into a 28-12 halftime lead. Up 35-19 to start the final period, Washington sent the Broncos to the glue factory with a 21-0 run.  Dawgs QB Michael Penix, Jr. cooly completed 29 of 40 passes for 450 yards and five TDs.  His favorite target was WR Rome Odunze had seven receptions for 132 yards and score. For the Broncos, QB Taylen Green completed 19 of 39 passes for 244 yards, as TD and two interceptions.
Telling Stat: Blackjack twice is nice for the Dawgs; Washington went on two, 21-0 scoring runs in this laugher on Montlake.

California 58- North Texas 21: Denton, TX- Last Friday Cal was able to escape the wreckage of the Pac 12 and accept an invite to joint the ACC. Last Saturday Cal played actual football and turned the North Texas Mean Green into wreckage at DATCU Stadium. The Golden Bears put up double digits in every quarter while their defense gave up some big plays early. The Cal defense stepped up and shutout UNT in the second half. Cal ran over, around and through the Mean Green for 357 yards on 56 carries. RB Jaydn Ott had a big game rushing for 188 yards and two TDs on 20 carries.  His backfield mate, RB Isaiah Ifanse only rushed for 54 yards, but he found the end zone three times. Cal had good day in the air too.  QB Ben Finley connected on 24 of 34 passes for 279 yards with one TD and an interception. As for UNT, QB Stone Earle had an up and mostly down day completing 12 of 19 passes for 174 yards, three TDs and two interceptions.
Telling Stat: They got defensive; Cal's defense held North Texas to nine total yards and a single first down in the second half.

Oregon 81- Portland State 7: Eugene, OR-  The Ducks got their season and QB Bo Nix's Heisman Campaign off to a roaring start with a dismantling of the Vikings.  The Webfoots jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead on a 13-yard pass from Nix to WR Troy Franklin and two-point conversion run from RB Nate Bennett.  PSU cut that lead to 8-7 on a nine-yard TD pass from QB Dante Chachere to WR Chance Miller.  The Vikings offense would never be heard from again.  UO would score the next 74 points.  In just a little over one half's worth of work, Nix completed 23 of 27 aerials for 287 yards and three TDs.  Nix didn't register a single rushing yard because he didn't have to.  RB Bucky Irving topped all rushers with 119 yards on just four carries with a pair TDs. Former Trojan Gary Bryant, Jr. caught seven passes for 100 yards and two scores of his own. Oregon scored on 11 straight possessions and didn't punt until their third stringers failed to convert on third down with 6:09 left in the game.
Telling Stat; 729 + 37= 81: Oregon racked up 729 yards off offense and 37 first downs en route to scoring their most points in a game in modern history.  The Quacks beat University of Puget Sound 115-0 in 1910.

Washington State 50- Colorado State 24: Fort Collins, CO- With all the noise generated by the Pac 12 team from Colorado, Wazzu's 50-point effort against a MWC team from the same state got overlooked by most folks. The Cougars came out and methodically built up a 17-3 halftime advantage on a one-yard TD dash from QB Cameron Ward and a three yard TD pass from Ward to WR Kyle Williams.  Wazzu then took a commanding 29-3 in a 28 second span of the third quarter. RB John Mateer's three-yard jaunt extending Wazzu's lead to 22-3 at the 11:18 mark of the period. Then a scant :18 later DB Jaden Hicks picked off a pass from CSU QB Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi and returned 37-yards for a touchdown and a 29-3 lead. Then the wild fourth quarter started.  Wazzu drove for three more scores while the Rams scored on a 98-yard kickoff return from KR Kobe Johnson, a 75-yard TD pass from Fowler-Nicolosi to WR Justus Ross-Simmons and a 20-yard TD run from RB Dallin Holker.  For the victorious Cougars Ward torched the Rams for 451 yards through the air and three scores while also running for 40 more yard and another TD. Ward's top target on the evening was WR Lionel Victor who caught 11 balls for 168 yards. For CSU, Fowler-Nicolosi completed 13 of 20 passes for 210 yards, two TDs and an interception.
Telling Stat: 30/37:40;  Wazzu made 30 first downs and held the ball for 37:40 to control this game from the opening kickoff.

Arizona 38- Northern Arizona 3: Tucson, AZ- Fears of suffering another upset loss like in 2021 to the Lumberjacks could be felt throughout State Farm Stadium as the Wildcats stumbled their way through the first half.  UofA held a 14-3 lead at the break despite fumbling the ball away on two drives and being held for downs at the NAU 35-yard line on another.  The Lumberjacks then took the second half kickoff and drove the ball down to the Cats nine-yard line to start the third quarter.  The Jacks decided on a field goal attempt to make it a one score game when Arizona's special teams changed the game.  NAU PK Marcus Lye had his kick blocked and returned 85-yards for a touchdown by CB Tecario Davis. The Wildcats had control of the game after that and managed to grind out 17 more points as their offense did have its' struggles the rest of the way. QB Jayden DeLaura led the way for the UofA attack competing 18 of 24 tosses for 285 yards with three TDs and an interception.  He also ran for 47 yards on three carries and trip to the end zone.  In the defeat, NAU QB Kai Miller complete 14 of 22 passes for 166 yards.
Telling Stat: 4-3-1 defense does it; Arizona's defense shutout Northern Arizona in the second half forcing four punts, holding for downs three times and blocking one kick.

UCLA 27- Costal Carolina 13: Pasadena, CA- A small gathering came to the Rose Bowl to watch the bRuins outlast a solid Chanticleer squad.  Yes, UCLA was looking at a somewhat difficult task of beating a Coastal Carolina team that was coming off a pair of impressive seasons, but the big concern for bRuin fans is who would they see take over at QB with Dorian Thompson-Robinson gone to the NFL.  Ethan Garbers got the start for UCLA. He played competently, but heralded five-star freshman Donte Moore turned out to be the more dynamic QB as the game wore on.  Nursing a 14-13 lead in the fourth quarter, Moore threw a beautiful TD pass to WR J. Michael Sturdivant that covered 62 yards.  That gave UCLA the breathing room they needed to finish if the game.  The bRuin defense then picked off a ball deep in Chanticleer territory on one drive then held for downs on another. That led to a pair of UCLA field goals by PK R.J. Lopez of 31 and 47 yards to put the game away.  Garbers final start line was 10 completions in 17 attempts for 121 yards a TD and two interceptions.  Moore completed seven of 12 passes for 143 yards, two TDs and an interception.  For the 'Cleers QB Grayson McCall hit on 27 of 42 passes for 271 yards, a TD and two interceptions.
Telling Stat: 4 for 31= 0;  The UCLA defense didn't allow a point while holding Coastal Carolina to just 31 yards on their final four drives to ensure a victory.

Oregon State 42- San Jose State 17: San Jose, CA- The Beavers came to San Jose and manhandled the Spartans with a bruising rushing attack and a solid defense.  Oh, and OSU's passing game was pretty good too with Clemson transfer D.J. Uiagalelei at QB.  Uiagalelei's accuracy and RB Damien Ramirez's running was a one-two punch that the Spartans could not stop.  OSU turned a 7-3 lead into a 21-3 halftime edge on a 14-yard pass from Uiagalelei to TE Jack Velling and a one-yard sneak by Uiagalelei. The Beavers held a 28-10 lead early in the final period after SJSU TE Sam Olson recovered a fumble for a TD. QB Chevan Cordeiro was stripped of the ball just short of the OSU end zone and Olson was alert and got on it for the score. After that, Oregon State wrapped two TD drives around a Spartan fumble to end the competitive portion of the contest.  The TDs were a 28-yard TD pass from Uiagalelei to WR Anthony Gould and a three-yard dash to paydirt by RB Deshaun Fenwick. Uiagalelei was cool and efficient in his OSU debut completing 20 of 25 throws for 239 yards and three TDs.  He also crossed the double stripe on a pair of short QB sneaks for two more tallies. Martinez led all rushers with 145 yards on 18 carries.  SJSU's Cordeiro threw for 143 yards in the losing effort.
Telling Stat: They moved the chains;  OSU piled up 27 first downs, but faced only eight third downs in the game thanks to averaging 9.9 yards per pass and 5.6 yards per rush against San Jose State.

Observations

...Hail to the suspended?;  Michigan players did this weird salute to show solidarity with suspended HC Jim Harbaugh before their first play v. East Carolina.  SMH.  The Cult of Jim

...He ain't happy;  UCLA HC Chip Kelly is not thrilled with the new clock rules and let ESPN know about it. Four Drives

...Just an idea;  The NCAA requires that a conference has a minimum of eight teams to be considered an official conference.  However, the NCAA has a two year grace period for compliance.  So theoretically, OSU and WSU could pad their schedule next year with cupcakes, then play each other once in the regular season and then in the Pac 12 title game. The winner of the title game could claim an automatic berth in the new 12-team playoff in 2024.

...Flapping dead tired;  The 81 points scored by Oregon may have hurt Puddles the Duck more than the Portland State Vikings.  Puddles did cumulative push ups for each Duck score. That added up to 546 for the game! Check out the math here... 546!

...Cash strapped;  All athletic events were canceled at Tiny Alderson Broadus University in West Virginia last week. The school is over 27 million dollars in debt and had been served a service termination notice from their water, sewer and electricity providers for almost $800,000 in unpaid bills last month. West Virginia state officials have stepped in to oversee the school's closure.

...He's tanned, rested and ready;  I'm thinking LSU might want Coach O back right about now. Tell 'em Coach O!

...Just a rumor; There is no truth to the rumor that Texas A&M's 12th man club is buying the TAMU's new OC, Bobby Petrino a new Harley-Davidson after the Aggies whipped New Mexico, 52-10. This rumor was brought to you by our Aggie alum/Field Agent in the desert.

...Double century mark;  UNC HC Mack Brown is now the only coach to notch 100 wins at two different FBS schools.

...This just in; Duke is a football school.

...Just a thought; I'm starting tho think the D.J. Uiagalelei wasn't the problem with the Clemson offense.

...So long, Fubo et al; Saturday was USC's last contractually required appearance on the Pac 12 Network. As the clocked ticked down to 0:00 in the Trojans rout of Nevada you could feel all the subscriptions to streaming services that carry the Pac 12 Network being canceled all across Southern California.

...The clock is a Beaver;  With the way they rely on power running and a short controlled passing game, Oregon State's offense is perfectly suited to take advantage of the new clock rules.

...New guys;  While watching the week one games it became clear that there are a new group of referees this year in the Pac 12.  Here's a story on just what has gone on with the Pac 12 refs. Turnover

...Nervous time in Waco;  After suffering an embarrassing 42-31 upset loss to the Texas State Bobcats, Baylor now hosts Utah this week without their starting signal caller. QB Blake Sharpon has an injured MCL and will miss the next 2-3 weeks. Wow.

...Old Lead Dog vibes;  Washington's rekindled killer instinct reminds me of Husky teams coached by the great Don James.

...New regime, same result;  New Nebraska HC Matt Rhule's gut wrenching 13-10 loss to Minnesota was all too familiar to the fans of the Big Red. Maybe Nebraska is just a volleyball school now.

...What a feeling;  Got my first "are you still watching warning" of the season by Dish Network Sunday when I was locked on CBS for the six or so hours that the Northwestern-Rutgers and Oregon State- San Jose State games took to play.  Yes, I was still watching.  Yes, it was football and it was glorious.

...Same as in '29;  USC scored 66 points on Nevada on Saturday.  Last time Nevada played USC in 1929, the Trojans also scored 66 points.

...He's got elite speed; Ole Miss HC Lane Kiffin's dog Juice is officially the Rebels tee dog. Go Juice! Go!

...Lacking clarity;  UCLA' s quarterback quandary its real. Neither QB really stood out against Coastal Carolina.  Ethan Garbers or Donte Moore has to step up and take the job if the UCLA is going to be a factor in the Pac 12 race.

...The look at me Buffs; Get used to it, folks. Colorado will suck up all the oxygen in the Pac 12 for awhile.

...Dig the retro;  Shoutout to UTEP for bringing back the Angry Miner logo last week for their win over Incarnate Word.

...I'm not arguing with him;  Dick Butkus is a fun follow on Twitter.  A couple of days ago he sent this out in advance of the Bears-Packers matchup this week.  Da Bears!

...Both ways;  Colorado WR/DB Travis Hunter played both ways, logging 129 plays v. TCU last Saturday.  Many wonder if the kid can keep this up all year.  This intrepid reporter has seen Shohei Ohtani do things nobody has ever done in MLB. So hey, anything is possible I guess.

...Bloomington Blues; Anybody else wondering what's wrong with TheeeOSU after they scored only 23 points at Indiana?

...The Baker's Dozen;  The Pac 12 is 13-0 to start the season.  Looks like the league is taking Dylan Thomas' advice and not going gentle into that good night.

...Bad timing;  The new timing rule is so bad.  We are getting less plays per game but more commercials.  The games last just as long with less actual football being played. SMH

...Deion being Deion;  A lot of us haven't seen it in awhile, but Deion Sanders' Primetime persona is back in full form.  He's always had his "wars" with the press too. It's an easy way for him to put a huge chip on his shoulder or now his team's shoulders for motivation.  The way he treated the reporters after the game Saturday is nothing new.  Remember Deion and the water throwing incident with Tim McCarver back in the 1992 NLCS?  Read about it here... Buckets Watch it here... Doused

A Note on the NFL

The 104th season of the NFL kicks off this Thursday when the defending Super Bowl Champion Chiefs host the Detroit Lions.  Once every few years, I ask you dear readers this question.  Let me set the scene for you all.  You find your self stuck inside the Pro Football Hall of Fame after hours. Somehow, all the busts come alive and turn into the living embodiment of all those enshrined in their athletic prime and they are going to play a game. Who is your number one draft pick for the greatest pickup football game of all-time?  The Hall of Fame Rollcall

Pac 12 Overreactions

Utah is a 10-win team.
Oregon State's defense is better than Utah's.
USC's defense will cost the Trojans two games.
ASU's biggest weakness is 2 1/2 hour weather delays.
Stanford is a four win team.
Colorado is bowl bound.
Washington State will win the Apple Cup.
UCLA can't win with two QBs.
Oregon might put 90 on Texas Tech this week.
Cal's defense will get them to a bowl game.
Arizona just wants be acknowledged by the rest of the league.
Wazzu will ruin someone's season.

Ugly Uniform of the Week

Certain things are inevitable. Death, taxes and Oregon being in this part of the blog a few times a year are three of them.  Here are the Quacks in yet another ugly variation of their hi-liter yellow look.

RIP to a Legend

This past Friday Jimmy Buffet passed away.  The man made a life out of a lifestyle and had millions of us Parrotheads dreaming of the perfect Margarita and that One Particular Harbor. Back in 1990 my friend Chris Eggers introduced me to Buffet's music. He handed me the CD  Songs You Know by Heart and I was hooked. Concerts, Hawaiian shirts, tequila and rum found special places in my life.  His music has been a soundtrack for my life and that of my wife's as well.  I also loved his books.  Tales From Margaritaville is my favorite.  The short stories of the inhabitants of Heat Wave, Alabama became special for me to the point that I kept a tattered copy with me for years almost everywhere I went.  To describe Jimmy's life,  a fitting epitaph would be a couple of lines from He Went to Paris. "Some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I had a good life all the way."

Departments

Low Score Game of the Week: St. Louis, MO- Come with me to the NAIA ranks where the Statesmen of William Penn University grinded out a 6-2 win over the Missouri Baptist University Spartans. PK Ethan Olivas was the offense for William Penn. His 29-yard field goal in the first period and a 23-yarder in the third period provided all the scoring the Statesmen would need. MBU's lone score came with 7:12 left to play when a bad snap sailed over the WPU punter Cael Crawford's head out of the end zone for a safety. WPU held Mo Baptist to just 192 total yards on the day. The defensive player of the game was WPU  DB Howard Huerta. Huerta picked off two passes to kill MBU's only serious two drives deep into WPU territory.

Blowout Game of the Week: Midland, TX- This game comes from the D-III ranks where the University of Texas- Permian Basin Falcons crushed the Texas College Steers, 96-0. Couldn't find a box score for this game, but thanks to Midland Reporter-Telegram we do know that UTPB wanted to be aggressive in this game and even started it off with an onside kick.  However Falcons HC Kris McCullough refrained from putting up triple digits and said after the game, "Scoring 96 points, we had a chance to score 100. But I couldn't do that. That's not the sportsmanship way to go about it."  Yeah, OK dude, whatever.

Razorback Report: Little Rock, AR-  Arkansas kicked off their season and helped celebrate the 75th anniversary of War Memorial Stadium with a 56-13 beatdown of the Catamounts of Western Carolina.  QB K.J. Jefferson threw for 246 yards and three TDs for the Hogs, while the defense forced five WCU turnovers. One of those turnovers was a pick six when LB Brad Spence took a an errant pass 85-yards to paydirt. Next week the Hogs host the Kent State Golden Flashes.

This Week's Three Notes About Nothing...

Gotta up my grilling game. My steaks have not been great lately.

The breeze here the last few nights has had just enough of chill to it to act as a reminder that fall is coming soon.

Saw pumpkin spice flavored Cheerios at the store this week. Was not tempted to buy.

Until next time, remember that week one game results tend to look a lot different later in the season.
